The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) is one of the longest-running women’s professional sports associations in the world. Founded in 1950, the organization has grown from its roots as a playing tour into a non-profit organization involved in every facet of golf. The LPGA Tour and the LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals comprise the backbone of what has become the premier women’s professional sports organization in the world today. The LPGA maintains a strong focus on charity through: its tournaments; its grassroots junior and women’s programs; and the formation of The LPGA Foundation. The LPGA is under the guidance of Commissioner Michael Whan and is headquartered in Daytona Beach, Fla.

It was 1972; Portland had been without professional tour golf for several years. Elon Ellis wanted to bring it back. He gathered a group of fellow businessmen together; formed Tournament Golf Inc, and later that year the LPGA had another home on its tour. Now in its 46th year, Tournament Golf Inc. is now Tournament Golf Foundation (TGF), a non-profit organization that is the managing organizer of the Portland Classic. The tournament has become the largest annual professional golf event in the Pacific Northwest. TGF is comprised of 36 Portland area volunteer business leaders, their spouses and a full-time staff of five. Since 1972 TGF has generated more than $17 million for local Portland charities.

Each year proceeds from the tournament are donated to several local charities. The 2013 designated charities were: Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland, Easter Seals of Oregon, Trillium Family Services, Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division, Oregon Junior Golf and Evans Scholars Foundation, The Children’s Course/First Tee of Great Portland. All of these organizations have volunteers serving in a variety of roles during the tournament.
