City of Portland Proclaims August 31, 2017 “Nancy Lopez Day”
PORTLAND, OR – Nancy Lopez never saw it coming Thursday morning as Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz declared August 31, 2017 “Nancy Lopez Day” in the City of Portland. Lopez, a four-time Cambia Portland Classic champion and LPGA Hall of Fame golfer, was cited as, “a role model and exemplar of hard work, commitment and well-earned success for the women and girls of Portland.”
“It was indeed a surprise and a great honor from a great city. Receiving this proclamation is a recognition that I will always cherish because it comes with so many wonderful memories on the golf course here at Columbia Edgewater Country Club and in a city that has such a deep appreciation for the sport of golf,” said Lopez.
Lopez burst onto the women’s golf scene in 1978, earning rookie of the year honors while also leading the tour in earnings and being named player of the year. Lopez won 45 events during her nearly 30 years on the LPGA Tour, including three major championships. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987.
